adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca | nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī ||
Sanskrit / Transliteration
TRANSLATION
One who is not envious but is a kind friend to all living entities, who does not think himself a proprietor and is free from false ego, who is equal in both happiness and distress, who is always satisfied and engaged in devotional service with determination and whose mind and intelligence are in agreement with Me — he is very dear to Me.
EXPLANATION
This begins the famous 'dear to Me' passage (12.13-20) where Krishna describes the qualities of the highest devotee. This is not a description of an ascetic — it is a description of a person who is fully loving, fully engaged, and fully free. No envy, no ego, no possessiveness, equanimous in joy and sorrow.
