In Simple Terms
Your true self — not your body or thoughts, but the unchanging witness behind them.
Overview
The eternal, individual Self — unchanging, unborn, undying. Not the body, not the mind, not the intellect. The pure witnessing consciousness that never changes across births.
Why It Matters
Once you know the Atman is indestructible, fear of death dissolves. Action becomes free because the real self cannot be harmed.

Understanding the Atman — Four Approaches
Right now, you are experiencing thoughts, sensations, emotions. But who is noticing these? There is something that watches thoughts arise and pass. It is not itself a thought — because if it were, who would be watching it? The atman is this witnessing awareness: present in childhood, present in adulthood, present in joy and grief, unchanged by what passes through it. This is the unchanging observer that the Gita calls your "real self."
"Weapons cannot cut it, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, wind cannot dry it." This is not poetry — it is a philosophical claim. The elements operate on matter. The self is not matter. The question to ask yourself: when your body changes (ages, gets ill, grows), does the one who is aware of those changes also change? This is how you find the atman — not by looking for it, but by being it.
Many people hear "the soul is eternal" and imagine it as a personal ghost that continues after death — with your memories, your personality, your name. The Gita's atman is different: it transcends individual personality. It is not "you" in the biographical sense. This is why Krishna's teaching initially sounds cold to Arjuna — recognizing the eternal soul doesn't mean your personality survives unchanged. It means the deepest awareness in you never had a beginning and has no end.
